What is the Band Program?

Big Music’s Band Program is a unique, rock & roll-inspired performance experience for musicians of all ages. You’ll join a cast of like-minded players, form a real band, rehearse weekly with a pro musician as your coach, and work towards a high-energy live show in Big Music’s very own performance venue — complete with lights, sound, and cheering fans!

What age groups is the Band Program for?

We run Band Programs for:

• Junior Band (ages 8–13)

• Teen Band (ages 13–17)

• Adult Bands (18+ with no upper limit — it’s never too late to rock!)

Is it like joining a regular band that does gigs?

Yes — but with fewer headaches and more support. The Band Program gives you the full band experience with none of the hassle:

1. We match you with bandmates and handle the logistics

2. Your band is guided by an experienced professional coach

3. We provide the space, equipment, and set list

4. We organise your big performance

5. If your band hits a few "creative differences," your coach is there to mediate — and at the end of the program, you're free to stick together or try something new.

How good do I need to be?

You don’t need to be a rockstar — but you do need some basic playing skills. Here’s a guide:

• Guitarists: Must be able to read tabs and play power chords

• Bassists/Drummers: Should be able to play through full songs confidently and keep time

• Keyboard Players: Should play with both hands and follow song arrangements

• Vocalists: Must be confident learning songs at home and performing without reading lyrics

You don’t need band experience — that’s what this program is for!

How long does the program run?

• Adults: Choose from 8-week or 15-week programs, offered throughout the year

• Kids and Teens: Our Junior Band and Teen Band programs run in 15-week terms

All programs culminate in a live performance on stage.

Where and when will the band rehearse?

Bands rehearse weekly for 2 hours at Big Music’s fully equipped studios in Crows Nest. The exact day and time will depend on your band and coach — we’ll work with you to find a good fit.

What does it cost?

• Kids & Teens: $80 per week

• Adults: $90 per week

Fees are charged weekly for the duration of the program. Your fee includes:

• Weekly 2-hour coached band rehearsal

• Use of state-of-the-art gear and studio facilities

• Expert coaching from pro musicians

• A fully produced live performance in our venue

• Free entry for your family and friends at the show!

What gear do you provide?

We’ve got you covered with everything your band needs:

• Electronic drum kits

• Guitar and bass amps with onboard effects

• Keyboards

• Microphones and PA

• Cables, stands, mixing console, and more

Just plug in and play.

What gear do I need to bring?

• Guitarists and bassists: Bring your own instrument

• Drummers: Bring your own sticks

• Everything else is provided — amps, keyboards, mics, etc.

How much one-on-one coaching will I get?

The Band Program focuses on group rehearsal, not individual lessons. Your coach will offer tips and guidance, but the emphasis is on getting the whole band gig-ready. Many participants choose to supplement band rehearsals with private lessons — especially early on — to sharpen their skills.

Who chooses the songs?

Each Band Program has a theme (e.g. Classic Rock, Aussie Hits, 90s Bangers), and we share the proposed set list before it starts. You can choose the program that suits your musical taste.

Once you’re in, your coach will divide up the songs and parts based on everyone's strengths and interests, ensuring everyone gets a fair go.

Can I bring a few friends and form our own band?

Absolutely. You’re welcome to register as a group and be placed together.
We also offer Original Band Programs, where you and your friends can:

• Choose your own songs

• Work with a dedicated coach

• Write and record original material

• Rehearse and perform as your own band
