Band Program FAQs

Curious about how the Band Program works?
Here are answers to the most common questions from new band members and parents.

What is the Band Program?

Big Music’s Band Program is a unique, rock & roll-inspired performance experience for musicians of all ages. You’ll join a cast of like-minded players, form a real band, rehearse weekly with a pro musician as your coach, and work towards a high-energy live show in Big Music’s very own performance venue — complete with lights, sound, and cheering fans!

We now offer more ways than ever to get involved — whether you're a first-time jammer or a future headliner.

What age groups is the Band Program for?

We run Band Programs for:

  • Junior Band (ages 9–12)

  • Teen Band (ages 13–18)

  • Gen Z (ages 18-29)

  • Adult Bands (30+ — with no upper limit. It’s never too late to rock!)

Is it like joining a regular band that does gigs?

Yes — but with fewer headaches and more support. The Band Program gives you the full band experience without the hassle:

  • We match you with bandmates and handle the logistics

  • You’ll rehearse weekly with a professional coach

  • We provide the space, equipment, and set list

  • We organise your live performance

And if your band hits a few "creative differences," your coach is there to mediate. At the end of the program, you can stick together or try something new.

How good do I need to be?

You don’t need to be a rockstar — just have a solid foundation on your instrument. Here's a general guide:

  • Guitarists: Should be able to read tabs and play power chords

  • Bassists/Drummers: Should confidently play through full songs and keep time

  • Keyboard players: Should play with both hands and follow arrangements

  • Vocalists: Must be confident learning songs and performing without lyrics

You don’t need prior band experience — that’s exactly what this program helps you build!

What are Jamming Bands? (Adults 30+)

For adults 30+ who want a more flexible and low-pressure way to start playing in a band, we offer Jamming Bands — a more casual format that’s all about having fun and building confidence.

You’ll be matched with other musicians based on your availability, musical taste, and skill level, and invited to a trial jam session with a coach. If the chemistry is right, your band can choose to continue rehearsing and even perform at one of our showcase events.

Start by completing our Band Mate Matching Quiz so we can find your perfect match.

How long does the program run?

  • Juniors & Teens: 15-week terms, rolling into the next term with new band line ups, a fresh set of themes and new set lists

  • Gen Z (18-29):  15-week seasons on Friday evenings, rolling into each new season with new band line ups, a fresh set of themes and new set lists

  • Adults 30+: Choose between 15-week Seasonal Bands with a guaranteed Gig Night at the end, or ongoing Jamming Bands with optional performance opportunities every few months.

Where and when will the band rehearse?

Bands rehearse weekly for 2 hours, or 90 minutes for Jamming Bands, at Big Music’s fully equipped studios in Crows Nest. We’ll work with you to find a day and time that fits your schedule.

What does it cost?

  • Kids & Teens: $85 per week

  • Gen Z (18-29):  $59 per week

  • Adults 30+:  $95 per week

Includes:

  • Weekly 2-hour coached band rehearsal, or 90-minute sessions for Jamming Bands

  • Use of state-of-the-art gear and studio facilities

  • Expert guidance from pro musicians

  • A live performance (for Seasonal / Gig Night Programs) or optional showcases (for Jamming Bands)

  • Free entry for your guests on show night

How much one-on-one coaching will I get?

The Band Program focuses on the group experience. Your coach will support your development, but the emphasis is on rehearsing together. Many participants supplement with private lessons for extra progress.

Who chooses the songs?

Each Band Program has a theme (e.g. Classic Rock, Aussie Hits, 90s Bangers). You’ll know the set list before you start and can choose a program that suits your taste.

Jamming Bands can determine their own songs, in consultation with their coach.

Within the band, your coach will help divide up parts fairly based on everyone’s strengths and interests.

Can I bring a few friends and form our own band?

Absolutely! You’re welcome to register as a group in and be placed together in any of our Band Programs, and in our Jamming Band program your group can:

  • Choose your own songs

  • Work with a dedicated coach

  • Write and record original material

  • Perform together as a custom band

Talk to us and we’ll help create the right setup for you.

What will I get out of it?

  • Confidence and stage experience

  • Coaching from experienced musicians

  • Better playing, timing, and teamwork

  • Access to professional studios and stage

  • A strong musical community

  • A performance to remember (and maybe repeat!)
